Project Overview
Country Garden Oasis is a countryside farm based in Green Hills, California, that sells fresh vegetables, flowers, spring bulbs, dahlia tubers, fertilizers, birdhouses, and garden gift cards. They needed a modern, visually appealing Shopify storefront that could showcase their seasonal product catalog while supporting features like a CSA subscription program, school gardening partnerships, and local event promotion.
The client wanted a store that felt warm and organic — reflecting the farm's identity — while being technically robust enough to handle seasonal traffic spikes during spring and fall planting seasons.
Challenges Faced
The project had several unique requirements:
Seasonal Product Management: The product catalog changes dramatically between seasons. Spring bulbs, fall bulbs, and dahlia tubers each have limited availability windows, requiring dynamic collection management.
Complex Product Variants: Many products like bulbs and flowers come in multiple varieties, sizes, and quantity packs. The theme needed clean variant selection that didn't overwhelm customers.
Multiple Business Models: Beyond e-commerce, the store needed CSA subscriptions, school program signups, event registrations, and gift card sales.
Brand Identity: The theme needed to feel handcrafted and organic, avoiding the generic look of off-the-shelf Shopify themes.
Customer Retention Features: The client wanted wishlist functionality and a rewards program to encourage repeat purchases from seasonal gardeners.
My Approach
I built the theme from scratch using Shopify's Liquid templating language with a mobile-first approach:
Phase 1 — Theme Architecture: Set up the Shopify theme structure with clean, modular Liquid sections and blocks. Created reusable snippet components for product cards, collection filters, and promotional banners.
Phase 2 — Homepage & Navigation: Built a dynamic homepage featuring a seasonal hero banner, featured product collections carousel, testimonials section, blog highlights, and newsletter signup.
Phase 3 — Product & Collection Pages: Developed custom collection pages with sidebar filtering by product type, price range, and growing zone. Built product detail pages with image galleries and variant selectors.
Phase 4 — Integrations & Features: Integrated Smile.io for rewards, Wishlist Plus, Klaviyo for email marketing, and configured multiple payment methods including Shop Pay, Apple Pay, and Google Pay.
Phase 5 — Performance & Launch: Optimized all theme assets, implemented responsive image srcsets, set up structured data for SEO, and ran full Lighthouse audits.
Results & Impact
The store launched on time and performed well:
Performance: PageSpeed 92/100 desktop, 88/100 mobile. LCP 1.8s, CLS 0.03. All Core Web Vitals passing.
Store Features: 6+ product categories, 50+ products, rewards program, wishlist, CSA subscriptions, blog with embedded video content, multi-payment support.
Client Satisfaction: Theme editor gives full control over seasonal banners, no developer needed for day-to-day updates, mobile-first design serves rural customers effectively.
